About

Artist's statement

In the last few years, I have created numerous works at Sanbao workshop in Jingdezhen, China. Jingdezhen, rich in kaolin clay, has been a centre of white porcelain. On the way to Sanbao Studio, located in the forest of Jingdezhen, I hear sounds of insect chirping in the background, of the stream flowing down alongside the road, and of the water mill pounding down relentlessly. Water mills at Jingdezhen have been grinding the kaolin crystals into clay used for making porcelain. I can still remember the pleasant sounds of the light breeze, the waving leaves, and the honking geese that wake up the day at Sanbao. The time I spent in Sanbao experimenting on the white clay has been a learning experience for me to understand the properties of clay that I did not know before.

The theme of this exhibition at Shanghai E-Land Gallery is ‘piled up on furniture’. There are approximately 750 objects presented at this exhibition. I used various colours and spaces of the old Chinese furniture, including tables, cupboards, and bookshelves, collected by E-Land. By stacking up multiple objects in the spaces of the furniture, and creating new decorative formations, I wanted to interpret objects in a multi-dimensional method. Also, I wanted to show the sculptural beauty and trails of time through rearrangement of beautiful oriental domestic objects.

I express my sincere gratitude to those who helped to make this exhibition at the E-Land Gallery possible, from beginning to the end.
